Boiler Capacity Increase Study

An existing power boiler was limited in the amount of wood waste it could burn due to an unacceptable increase in carryover and subsequent high emissions.
Temec was retained to perform a study to evaluate a number of proposed over fire air (OFA) system configurations by conducting computational flow and combustion modelling of the boiler for each configuration. An OFA system upgrade was viewed as a relatively inexpensive way to increase steam generation from wood residue while requiring minimal downtime.
Temec set the terms of reference including the basic layout of each possible OFA configuration and managed the study, while Process Simulations Limited (PSL) provided flow and combustion modelling services.
As a result of this project, the client was able to select the optimum OFA configuration for this particular application. The selection was based on best uniformity and lowest temperature at the bullnose, least attemperation water required, least CO concentration and lowest predicted carryover. The predicted specific heat generation was also modelled. |
